2018 Year Review and 2019 Goals

Last year, I wrote an interesting year review and was really inspired. Yet, I just don’t find my words this year.

I just ended my first year consulting. I’m in a good place as I found a handful of good clients by the end of the year. I finally have some kind of stability.

And as soon as it happened, I realized that I haven’t shipped this year.

Consulting was supposed to be a backdoor. I actually enjoy consulting and love having this big picture problem-solving.

But I wanna get more leverage and consult as a mean to finance my other projects and help other founders.,

I structure and check my progress in life around 6 main pillars:

  • Relations/people
  • Health&Fitness
  • Mindset
  • Learning
  • Finance
  • Business

They all overlap each other but they are important for me so that I don’t get lost, unfocused or forget what I learned before.

2018 Year review

Relations&People

The good:

I moved in with my girlfriend in Zurich and am up for a new challenge (and pretty much first relationship). It’s great!

I got closer to my close friends and to my family (though I see them less). I stopped having expectations that they didn’t have to live up to (I would love to meet more like-minded people around career, but that is my problem, not theirs and I understood that this year)

I met international friends in Medellin in January, in Barcelona and Valencia in July and at Oktoberfest

Not so good:

  • I didn’t join meetups or a co-working in Switzerland to meet like-minded people and feel lonely (professionally-wise)
  • I didn’t attend a conference (local or international in 2018
  • I didn’t put many efforts to meet new people in Zurich (I officially live there since 1st of December only though

Health&Fitness

The good:

  • I went over 50 ties to the gym in 2018 and found a type of training that I really enjoy, makes me feel good and is really effective
  • I know enough about diet and fasting to manage my weight quite well even when I don’t do what I should do

Not so good:

  • I didn’t make progress at the gym (my workouts weren’t consistent enough living between two cities)
  • I gained a few kilos as I was not really consistent during the week

Mindset:

The good:

  • I learned a lot and didn’t fall back in the previous trap complaining about “society”. On the macro, I kept a growth, accepting mindset.
  • I showed some courage a few times and it paid off

Not so good:

  • I stayed a bit too lonely and didn’t always share and ask for help
  • I sometimes started to have a scarcity mindset (but managed to keep it in check thanks to my daily journaling practice)
  • I was lacking focus and didn’t always see the big picture
  • I didn’t work hard enough and looked for shortcuts

Learning:

The good:

  • I learned a lot about marketing, automation, facebook ads, email marketing, funnels, copywriting and productization.
  • I learned a lot about consulting/freelancing (the business side)

Not so good:

  • I didn’t apply what I learned soon, fast or often enough (I did something about it for 2019)
  • I didn’t learn things for hobbies or just the sake of learning
  • I didn’t share what I learned on blogs, podcast

Finance:

The good:

  • I kept my backpacker/minimalist habits
  • I rented a flat (with my girlfriend) that is just what we need

Not so good:

  • I said yes to some events/weekends/dinner that I couldn’t afford at the time
  • I needed some short-term support at times (thanks to them, they will recognize)

Business:

The good:

  • I started from 0 and managed to build a consulting business without portfolio or experience
  • I reached out to people pitching ideas some of which paid off
  • I moved up the freelancer food chain by learning expensive skills + the why behind projects

Not so good:

  • I was unfocused, lost between French and English, looking for the perfect client (when I had to hustle up)
  • I didn’t work enough in public (Every time I posted an article or reached out to my network, something good arose, I just didn’t do it enough)
  • I didn’t ask for help (a referral, sharing a post, …soon enough)
  • 2018 overall was successful. I’m by all means a better version of myself than next year. I did new things and learned and I hope that I will learn from my mistakes.

I’m above all really grateful for my parents, brother, sister, girlfriend and closest friends. Thank you, you rock!

2019 Goals:

Well, the idea is to learn from my mistakes and keep what worked. Simple but not easy…

I will define a goal and a process to achieve the goal. My mastermind group with fellow entrepreneurs will keep me accountable and I hope that anyone reading this post will too.

  • Creating a pipeline of consulting leads
  • Building an email list of 5’000 consultants/freelancers/founders
  • Starting my podcast and publish 20 episodes minimum

Process:

  • Launching a project/product every month and doing it publicly
  • Creating funnels and email automation and content to feed my list
  • Doing outreach to be interviewed for podcasts (1/month)
  • Reaching out to people I know to help kickstart my podcast

Here you go. A lot of goals, but they all overlap.

On one side I have my personal life and I want to improve my health and athletic performance. I also want to meet new people in my new community.

On the other side, I want to meet like-minded people online and release helpful products and projects.

12 months / 12 projects to ship

It is something I’ve been thinking about doing for a long time. The biggest problem often is to finish something. This year, I decided that I will ship 1 project per month.

Why? I want to create a portfolio of products/projects to sell online. I’ve had ideas for products and started some projects but I was multi-projecting and nothing major got out of it.

This year, I want to single-focus with short sprints and get into the habit of shipping.

These 12 projects dont have to be a big product each time, but I want to build my muscle and separate my vision in small chunk that I publish.

Ideally, I will try to serve audiences that overlap between them (or are mostly the same) with each release so that I can leverage them for next project shipped. (even if the product failed)

I will build infoproducts, productized services or hands-on projects.

The challenge is on and the first project will be shipped by January 1st.
