The Sideway 1: Welcome to my newsletter

Happy Tuesday!

Hi there, I'm Benjamin Spring, and you receive this email because you signed up to hear from me at some point, but if you don't want these emails, simply Unsubscribe.

Welcome to my newsletter, The Sideway. Every Tuesday, expect a short but hopefully interesting email in your inbox.

I started this newsletter for myself. I want to find great ideas and improve my tastes and my thinking.

The main topics of this newsletter will be: Finance, Marketing, Career choices, Skills learning, Mental Models, Entrepreneurship, or Psychology...

I'm really interested in the idea of being a generalist, becoming antifragile, and fostering curiosity.

In this first weekly newsletter, I share about topics dear to my heart: Thinking, Writing online as a serendipity vehicle, and the Creator economy.

Thanks for reading

Thinking For Oneself
Farnam Street

"When I was young, I thought other people could give me wisdom. Now that I’m older, I know this isn’t true.

Shane Parrish wrote a beautiful short essay on how to earn wisdom. As a good friend of mine Jesper said, it's one of the best pieces on Farnam Street for a long time.

It resonated because I've fallen for the trap of reading self-improvements books and blogs about dating, fat-loss, or business at various moments of my life.

Knowledge is useful, but I still had to learn my lessons, making stupid mistakes...

How to Start a Blog that Changes Your Life
Nat Eliason

So when we talk about "starting a blog that can change your life," Growth Machine is the ultimate example. You never know when one article might define what you work on for the next few years.

Nat Eliason wrote an epic article on the virtues of blogging. I haven't had anything near the success Nat had, but I've seen from my own eyes the power of having a handful of great essays living on the web.

Beginning of March as the world was turning upside-down, I reached out to a startup to start working part-time as a marketer in Zurich. I never showed any CV but had some long-form essays doing the selling for me. It worked out well at a potentially rough time.

The 6 builders who will thrive in the new world
Brianne Kimmel

As the global pandemic leaves us frozen in place, it’s impossible to imagine a future that resembles the past. There will be no return to normalcy. Instead, we’ll need to create a new reality that’s resilient, anti-fragile and grounded in flexible, empathetic values as we re-enter the physical world with a new perspective.

I really enjoyed this read from Brianne Kimmel. As we enter a new world, several trends are accelerating and traditional career paths are less and less a viable way for people of my generation.

But I believe it's a good thing for a less calculating and more creative world where we contribute, learn new things and solve the next problems.

Whatever we want to learn, the bests in the world are teaching it for free on the Internet. The challenge for some is to accept that credentials are mostly useless and take on accountability.

Question, quote or idea of the week

How could I 10x the results? What should I eliminate or what should I do to 10x? (Dan Sullivan)

A cliche, I know. But when applied to a specific problem it might just be what we need to act big or think differently on how to tackle a problem.

End Note

Thank's a lot for reading. I'd love it if you shared it with a friend or two that could like it. You can send them here to sign up.
